Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and fluid regions, IGB helped a major shipyard solve fatigue issues in one of their tank designs.
This commission from a world leading shipbuilder is an IGB first in the maritime transport market. Fuel tanks in some of their container vessels were experiencing fatigue problems resulting from engine vibrations. They modified the design, but the results remained unsatisfactory.
Knowing that the next step would be a finite element analysis (FEA) on the dynamic behavior of the tanks, they requested IGB to provide this analysis.
Based on the line plans and section views of the hull, a finite element model was created. The situation was analyzed two-fold : first with empty tanks and then simulated as filled tanks using so called “fluids regions” in Femap. This feature allowed the analysis of the natural frequencies of both filled and partially filled tanks.
Our findings were sent to the client and our models were used as input for a design change.
